About Identity Theft Protection

There are several different types of identity theft protection. Some are reactive, some provide resolution services, and some are truly proactive.

Reactive - Credit monitoring services can be purchased through various companies, such as banks, insurance providers, credit bureaus. The monitoring services primarily are credit related. If a consumer receives a loan, the monitoring company will notify the consumer after the loan has hit their credit. The downside is that credit monitoring is a relative choice of protection. In most cases, the consumer will be notified that they just became a victim of identity theft, if the loan was not theirs. Credit monitoring also does not provide protection outside of credit. Consumers who may be victims due to employment fraud or government documents will not be notified through this form of protection.

Resolution Services - Consumers can also become members of resolution services. Resolution services provide their members service, after they become a victim of identity theft. A lot of times these companies can be looked at as an insurance company, where a member pays a fee each month and may have to pay a deductible for to the company to resolve the issues.

Proactive - There are a few true proactive companies, such as LifeLock, an industry leader in identity theft protection. These companies charge their members monthly, or annually to proactively protect them, by setting up the best lines of defense, and by battling more forms of identity theft then just credit related. The majority of these companies have guarantees, typically around $1 million. If one of their members, falls victim to identity theft, the guarantee will be invoked and the member will not have to pay any out of pocket expenses up to the guarantee amount. In addition a few of these companies will cover members who become victims of identity theft through forms which currently cannot be proactively protected, such as medical identity theft. These protection companies offer both of best worlds, they help to protect you from becoming a victim and if you still do become a victim, they will fix the issues.

Before choosing the right protection option for you and your family, do research on the company. Find out what they will really do if you become a victim of identity theft. What will their guarantee cover? Will you have to pay a deductible? What if you become a victim?
